KELLS A CANVAS OF TYPE
The Kells TypeTrial starting from 12th August has presented a rich tapestry of multi-disciplinary arts from within the community and beyond for over 12 years. Our mission, to promote Kells and showcase emerging and established, local and visiting artists, while fostering awareness, appreciation of, and community participation in the use of type as an art form. Each year one word is translated into a variety of languages reflecting the diversity of the community in Kells with the aim of providing a means to bring individuals and groups together. This year’s word is ‘Identity’.
A very exciting year as we have participation from secondary students from St Richard Gwyn, Flint in North Wales, young student designers from Athlone Institute of Technology and from artists across the country. Founder Mark Smith & his creative team have prepared and installed these artistic installations throughout Kells to form a trail making Kells a canvas for type. This takes the form of up to 21 indoor and outdoor art installations - mostly temporary in nature. Please enjoy your visit or stay in Kells, famous for the Book of Kells and it’s typographic artistry. Supported by Meath County Council Arts Office and Heritage Office, The Creative Arts Programme, The Arts Council and The Heritage Council.
